Vincenzo Nibali Sparks Debate Over Paul Seixas

Paul Seixas’s victory at the 2026 Giro di Lombardia made quite an impression on cycling fans. The 20-year-old Frenchman won one of the most prestigious classics on the calendar, taking advantage of Tadej Pogacar’s absence—Pogacar was forced to skip the Lombardy race following a recent injury sustained at the Vuelta. It was, therefore, a significant victory, achieved under unusual circumstances, as the Lombardy race had been the Slovenian champion’s exclusive domain for the past five years.
Vincenzo Nibali sparked the debate over the young French rider’s qualities and prospects when, speaking to Rai Sport after the race, he heaped high praise on Seixas. The “Shark of the Strait” said he was impressed by the performance of the Decathlon CMA CGM rider: “Despite his age, he’s self-assured, incredibly strong, and in great shape; he was able to make the difference with a commanding move.”
The conversation then inevitably turned to the Frenchman’s future prospects. “Seixas is undoubtedly the young rider to watch; at just twenty years old, he has enormous room for growth. I expect that in the future he’ll be able to battle it out with Pogacar in the most important races,” said the Messina native, one of only eight riders to have won at least one edition of the Giro, Tour, and Vuelta.
Nibali’s comments immediately sparked debate among fans and industry insiders. On one hand, there are those who agree with Nibali, seeing Seixas as Pogacar’s next main rival and the rider best equipped to take up the torch in the years to come. The ease with which he dominated the Lombardia, in this sense, is considered by many to be an unmistakable sign of his potential.
On the other hand, however, there are those who urge caution. For the most skeptical, the Frenchman’s talent is beyond question, but his success—achieved without the current dominant force in world cycling—is not yet enough to establish a new pecking order. In their view, Seixas will have to prove he can compete and win consistently even when Pogacar is on the starting line and in top form.
What is certain is that the 2026 Giro di Lombardia confirmed the arrival at the highest level of a young rider with extraordinary talent, even if the road to being ranked among the greatest is still long. One thing, however, seems clear: thanks to Nibali’s comments and his performance on the roads of Lombardy, Paul Seixas has now firmly entered the center of the international cycling debate. And the comparison with Pogacar, inevitably, has only just begun.
