Jannik Sinner, Another $4.5 Million Setback

Winning five Masters 1000 tournaments in the first half of the season isn’t enough to secure the biggest prize reserved for the top players on the tour. Jannik Sinner will lose approximately $4.5 million due to his exclusion from the 2026 ATP Bonus Pool, a financial incentive tied to results in the most important tournaments on the calendar. It is not his on-court results that are preventing him from receiving the payment, but the regulations, which stipulate specific participation requirements.
The lengthy hiatus due to a knee injury forced the Italian champion to sit out the second half of the season. This was a necessary decision to ensure his recovery ahead of 2027, but it also has significant financial consequences. In fact, Sinner tops the points standings for the Bonus Pool but is unable to receive the corresponding prize.
The Bonus Pool is a fund that the ATP distributes annually to players who excel in the Masters 1000 tournaments. For 2026, the total amount is $21.5 million, allocated to the top 30 players in the special rankings based on their results throughout the season. Starting in 2028, the prize pool will rise to $50 million.
Sinner had built up a massive lead thanks to consecutive victories at Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid, and Rome. These results would have guaranteed him a prize estimated at approximately $4.5 million, taking into account both the fixed and variable components. However, the rules stipulate that to qualify for the bonus, a player must participate in at least five of the eight mandatory Masters 1000 tournaments. Although Monte Carlo was one of the tournaments won by the Italian, it does not count toward the total because it is not considered mandatory.
His withdrawal from the last four Masters 1000 tournaments of the season therefore triggered his exclusion. The system, in fact, provides for progressive penalties for absences: 25% of the prize money is forfeited for one missed tournament, 50% for two, and 75% for three. With four absences, Sinner loses his entire entitlement to the Bonus Pool.
