Following the reactions to her previous announcement, the Ukrainian tennis player posted a lengthy message on social media to better explain her position, focusing on the impact of the war, her shifting priorities, and her relationship with her husband. Svitolina also sought to defend Monfils against the accusations he faced, asking for respect and understanding for both of them. “I just want to clarify my previous post a bit more, because I realized that not everyone—especially those who follow me from abroad—fully understood what I was trying to say.”
The Ukrainian tennis player clarified that what she initially shared represented only part of the reasons behind the separation. “In that post, I shared only one of the reasons that influenced my decision and led me to reflect on my life and my future. But the truth is that there’s much more to it than that, and it was never just a single reason.”
Svitolina then explained how the years marked by the war in Ukraine have shaped her outlook on life and her personal priorities.”“When you live through the reality of war for over four and a half years, experiencing so many different situations, emotions, and difficult moments, you inevitably start to see life through different eyes. Your perspective changes, your values and priorities shift, and you begin to understand what you truly want from life.”
This profound change led her to question her own happiness and the future of her marriage. “At a certain point, I simply realized that I didn’t want to continue living a life in which I wasn’t truly happy. And believe me, coming to this decision was anything but easy.”
Despite the decision to separate, Svitolina reiterated the deep affection and respect she continues to feel for the French tennis player. “I love and respect my husband very much. And I will always continue to love and appreciate him for the person he is. That’s exactly why it was so important for me to be honest—both with him and with myself.”
The tennis player also emphasized how difficult it is to publicly discuss all aspects of such a personal matter. “It’s not always possible to explain everything behind such personal and difficult decisions in a single post. And, honestly, some things are simply too intimate to share publicly.”
