Juventus: Spalletti’s (double) decision following Bremer’s outburst

Juventus is trying to put the crushing defeat against Lazio and the tensions that followed the match behind them. The focus is on Gleison Bremer, who found himself in the spotlight after the comments he made following the home loss and was forced to back down in front of the coach and his teammates. Luciano Spalletti, however, has chosen to move past the controversy, reaffirming his confidence in the Brazilian defender.
The Bianconeri center back will once again start in the Europa League match against Rennes—a significant signal from the coach. Although the comments he made after the match against Lazio caused some discontent in the locker room, Bremer remains an important figure within the Juventus hierarchy.
It all stemmed from the statements Bremer made following the loss to Lazio. The defender had drawn attention to the mental resilience issues of some of his teammates, emphasizing that not everyone reacts the same way in difficult moments: “The coach gives instructions, but in the end, we’re the ones who take the field. I can’t carry everyone on my back,” he said, adding that some players may get scared when they hear the crowd booing.
Spalletti didn’t take kindly to these remarks and stepped in to stress the need for individual self-criticism before analyzing collective mistakes. The coach also addressed the issue in the locker room, asking the Brazilian to reflect on the meaning of his statements. Bremer then decided to clarify his position, apologizing to the coach and his teammates. The defender explained that he had expressed himself poorly, driven by disappointment over the result, and that he had wanted to shake up the team but had failed to find the right way or the right time to do so. The matter was resolved with his acceptance of a fine, and no further disciplinary action is expected.
Another important aspect concerns Bremer’s role within the team. In the absence of Manuel Locatelli, the Brazilian wore the captain’s armband, and the controversy following the match against Lazio had fueled questions about whether he might lose it. Spalletti’s decision to keep him in the starting lineup for the Europa League is a sign of confidence, even if it does not amount to a definitive decision regarding the pecking order for the captaincy. Bremer remains, however, among the players called upon to lead the team during a delicate phase of the season.
