Inter’s Marcus Thuram is sarcastic about the referees: “Everyone thinks so…”

Inter came from behind to beat Fiorentina at San Siro, and after the game, Marcus Thuram took a few jabs at referee Mariani over the penalty call that was denied in the 69th minute following contact with Viery.

““Every time the referee thinks I’m diving—I got a yellow card in Bologna and they said it was a penalty. To the referees, I’m a diver. Again today—mistakes happen—but I have to keep challenging the opponent; eventually, they’ll call the penalty, just like they did today,” he said in his post-match comment.

The French forward did, however, draw the game-winning penalty in the closing minutes: “There’s confidence in the team that we can win the game even at the very end; we did it, and we know we can always win,” the French forward continued.

Nerazzurri coach Cristian Chivu tried to defuse the controversy: “In the end, we were rewarded because, despite falling behind, we kept our composure and stayed focused. I congratulate my players; they created chances and tried to bring home the victory. These are games that aren’t easy for me or for them. We deserved it today; I would have said that even if we’d lost. I’ve always said that games last 90 minutes—I don’t want to see people feeling sorry for themselves or complaining about the referee’s calls. I want to see people who believe in themselves and fight back.”
