An incredible night for Como, which crushed Lens with a historic 9-1 victory and captured the attention of all of Europe: never before had a Serie A team managed to score nine goals in a Champions League match.

The final goal of the record-breaking 9-1 victory was scored by Matteo Papaccioli, an Italian-Brazilian midfielder born in Taubaté who moved to Italy as a child. Born in 2008, Papaccioli came up through Como’s youth system, earning a call-up to Italy’s Under-18 national team.

Papaccioli was making his first-ever first-team appearance this season, and he marked his debut with the 9-1 goal, scored at age 18 on a night that will remain memorable for him as well.

Fabregas’s team pressed the French side from the opening minutes and took the lead in the 7th minute through Douvikas, off a layup from Perrone. Lens responded by earning a penalty, which was later overturned by VAR, but from that point on, it was all Como: Douvikas scored his second goal off an assist from Valle, and Nico Paz made it 3-0. In the second half, Da Cunha scored the fourth goal, Kempf made it 5-0 off a cross from Milla, and Douvikas completed his hat trick to make it 6-0, again assisted by Paz. After Fabregas made some substitutions, Liberali (7-0) and Baturina—set up by Liberali himself—also found the net to make it 8-1, while Lens’s only goal came from Aguilar, making it 1-7. Papaccioli’s goal, making it 9-1, came in the 92nd minute.
