Cristiano Ronaldo’s farewell to the Portuguese national team has certainly brought an era to a close, but the statement released by the FPF, the Portuguese Football Federation, leaves the door open, going well beyond a simple institutional farewell. Alongside expressions of gratitude for an unparalleled career, in fact, a clear proposal emerges: to celebrate the star player with a special tribute involving fans, institutions, and the entire country—much like what happened on the night of October 6–7 in Italy during Leo Messi’s final match in an Argentina jersey.

“The Portuguese Football Federation expresses its deepest and most enduring gratitude to the eternal captain, Cristiano Ronaldo, who today announced his definitive retirement from the national team,” reads the FPF’s lengthy statement. “It is with a sense of deep gratitude and immense admiration that the Federation wishes to publicly pay tribute to and thank Cristiano Ronaldo for his absolutely extraordinary career in the service of our country.”

“More than just a champion,” the federation’s leadership added, “our captain has been an inspiring leader, a model of dedication, and the truest symbol of the soul of our national team. Throughout a legendary international career, marked by 234 appearances and 146 goals, the captain carried Portugal on his shoulders, broke records, and led the team to achievements that will forever remain in the history of Portuguese soccer.”

“Every drop of sweat, every decisive goal, and every captain’s armband worn with pride reflected his unconditional love for our jersey. His dedication and legacy extend far beyond the playing field. Cristiano Ronaldo has elevated Portugal’s name and inspired generations of young people who dream of following in his footsteps, becoming, for many of us, the greatest player of all time.”

At the end, a message directed at CR7: “The Portuguese Football Federation refuses to let this farewell pass without the tribute it deserves. It is our firm desire to organize, plan, participate in, and actively collaborate on what will be a celebration worthy of Cristiano Ronaldo’s immense career, so that fans and the entire country can once again applaud and celebrate the player who has given us so much. Thank you for everything, Captain! This will always be your home! Onward to goal number 1,000!”

While we await details on the format and timing, we look forward to what will most likely be a landmark match, a special ceremony, or some other event designed to unite the Portuguese people around the man who, more than any other, has shaped the country’s soccer history.
