Cristiano Ronaldo’s Sensational Farewell to Portugal: “Leaving with My Head Held High”

The time has come for Cristiano Ronaldo to say goodbye to the national team. The Portuguese star announced it in a lengthy video posted on social media, in which he looked back on his 23 years with the Portuguese national team, including successes, records, trophies, and difficult moments. It’s a major decision, coming just a few weeks after his falling out with head coach Jorge Jesus. Last October, CR7 had in fact left the national team’s training camp after a confrontation with the coach, fueling doubts about his future with the Portuguese national team. Now the striker himself has put an end to the speculation by officially announcing his retirement.
“Today marks the end of my journey on the field with the national team. I’m leaving with my head held high, proud of the journey I’ve taken and knowing that I gave everything I had for Portugal,” Ronaldo said in the video.
In his message to his fellow countrymen, the champion reflected on the significance of the No. 7 jersey, which he first wore in August 2003. “The day has come to return the No. 7 jersey of the national team that belongs to all of us. I never felt it was exclusively mine. But for 23 years, I’ve had the privilege and responsibility to wear it, to defend it, and to carry it with me in stadiums all over the world.”
It’s been a journey that changed his life, taking him through unforgettable victories and disappointments. Ronaldo didn’t shy away from acknowledging his failures either: “I’ve also failed; I’ve also suffered; there were even moments when I wasn’t able to give the Portuguese people what they so desperately wanted. But I never gave up. And above all, I never stopped taking pride in representing Portugal.”
In his lengthy farewell, he thanked his teammates, coaches, executives, staff, family, and fans, emphasizing the special bond he’s built with his country.
