Milan’s performance was too bad to be true: Ferencvaros dominated at San Siro. The ruthless Europa League standings

A cold shower for Ruben Amorim’s Milan, which—after the glory of last weekend’s derby triumph over Inter—suffered a crushing defeat at San Siro against Ferencvaros in the match counting toward Matchday 3 of the Europa League group stage. The Rossoneri, hampered by numerous absences, failed to make an impact and were defeated 2-0 by the Hungarians: in the standings, the Diavolo—suffering their third loss in Europe—have just three points in four games and face the risk of immediate elimination. Ferencvaros sits atop the standings with a perfect record of 12 points.
It was a poor first half for the home team, which got off to a terrible start: the Rossoneri never posed a threat, and their possession was fruitless. Milan’s first shot on goal came in the 39th minute, while the visitors were decidedly more aggressive and created several chances, most of which were thwarted by 21-year-old goalkeeper Torriani, who was filling in for the suspended Maignan.
At halftime, Amorim made three substitutions, bringing in Gila, Moreira, and Pulisic for Musah, Cissé, and Diawara. But things took a turn for the worse: in the 53rd minute, De Winter and Torriani made a mess of things; Zachariassen took advantage and was brought down by the Milan goalkeeper. From the penalty spot, Joseph put the Hungarians ahead.
Milan tried to create danger through Moreira and Hutchinson, but in the 66th minute, they conceded Ferencvaros’ second goal: after Gila lost possession, Zachariassen set up Joseph, who made it 2-0 for the Hungarians. Amorim’s team struggled to respond; the substitutions of Camarda and Jashari had no effect, and they came close to conceding a third goal on several occasions. In the 78th minute, Yusuf was sent off for a shove on Gila, but the Rossoneri failed to capitalize and remained lackluster. Ramos was practically invisible, and Rabiot was also a non-factor. The match ended 0-2 amid boos; for Milan, it was more than just a step backward.
