Marc Marquez: Victory and Controversy—His Tenth Title Is Just Around the Corner

Marc Marquez wins the Sprint Race at the Qatar Grand Prix and moves even closer to the world title. The Spanish Ducati rider crossed the finish line first after ten laps, finishing 862 thousandths ahead of Fabio Di Giannantonio and 1.519 seconds ahead of Jorge Martin. This result puts him in a strong position heading into Sunday’s race, with a real chance to clinch the world title.
The restart, following Pecco Bagnaia’s terrifying crash and the red flag, was immediately lively: Marquez got off to a strong start and took the lead, with Marco Bezzecchi right on his heels. The Aprilia rider tries to put pressure on his rival, sparking a duel filled with passes and counter-passes. On the fourth lap, however, the decisive moment occurs: the two make contact at Turn 1, and Bezzecchi crashes out, retiring from the race.
Race Control launched an investigation into the incident but decided not to take any action against Marquez. Rivola greeted this decision in the Aprilia pit with a defiant round of applause. The Spaniard was thus able to continue without penalty and secure his victory. Behind him, Di Giannantonio put on a great performance and managed to pass Martin, claiming second place. The Aprilia rider, struggling with physical issues and tire management, had to settle for third place. Raul Fernandez and Johann Zarco round out the top five. Pedro Acosta is sixth, ahead of Ai Ogura, while Enea Bastianini finishes eighth.
With his victory in the Sprint race, Marquez extends his lead over Jorge Martin—who is second in the world championship standings—to 49 points. The Spanish rider now has the chance to mathematically clinch the title as early as Sunday’s race. Bezzecchi, third and 79 points behind the leader, is out of contention for the World Championship. Behind the top three, the standings show Pedro Acosta in fourth place, followed by Ai Ogura and Fabio Di Giannantonio. Francesco Bagnaia is ninth with 173 points, while Enea Bastianini sits in eleventh place.
