F1, Japanese GP: free practice 2, Piastri surprises Mercedes, Ferrari reviewable

In Free Practice 2 of the Japanese GP, the third round of the World Championship, the best overall time (1’30″133 his time), surprisingly, is by Piastri in a McLaren. The Australian, who has not yet taken part in any GPs due to various problems, shone on the Suzuka track, confirming that McLaren can be the surprise of the weekend. “This start of the season has given Oscar (Piastri, ed.) a chance to test his mental strength. We have to give great credit to him for his personal growth,” the words of Andrea Stella, McLaren team principal.
Behind him are the two Mercedes cars of Antonelli and Russell, respectively, who, as in the first free practice session, showed an important race pace, definitely superior to all their opponents. The Ferraris of Leclerc and Hamilton placed fifth and sixth, respectively. A good seventh place for Hulkenberg in Audi should be noted. Difficulties for Verstappen who continues to underperform with his Red Bull.
Particularly nervous Hamilton who, via radio, complained about his SF-26, highlighting the lack of feeling with the single-seater. In fact, this is the first time the seven-time World Champion has been unhappy with his Ferrari’s performance this early in the season. Tomorrow, at 7 a.m., qualifying is scheduled with the Ferraris called upon to take a step forward compared to free practice.
Also worth mentioning is Fornaroli’s first experience with McLaren, in Formula 1, who lapped in that of Barcelona: “It went well, I’m very happy. I finally tried a Formula 1 car, too. It took some time to get used to it. The car is beautiful to drive. I’m looking forward to the next test. Physically it’s tough. I have to learn to drive more loosely,” the words of the Italian driver, third driver at McLaren, to Sky Sport.
