2026 World Cup: Mexico Sweeps Aside Ecuador as Well and Advances to the Round of 16

Mexico’s World Cup run continues. Aguirre’s team defeated Ecuador 2-0, securing a spot in the round of 16. This marks Mexico’s fourth victory in as many matches.
It had been 40 years since Mexico last won a knockout match. They did it at the Azteca Stadium, just as they did 40 years ago, in their only previous victory in a do-or-die match (against Bulgaria).
It was a one-sided match, with Mexico never giving Ecuador a single chance to get into the game. The goals that decided the match were scored by Jiménez and Quinones.
“You get through the group stage and play well, but then there’s a crucial mistake that knocks you out. Today, the connection with the fans gave us a boost. This is a spectacular stadium. It’s a great night for the Mexicans,” said Coach Aguirre, as reported by ESPN. In the next round, Mexico will face the winner of the match between England and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, again at the Azteca Stadium.
