Farewell to a cricket legend: Garfield Sobers has died
The cricket world is mourning the passing of Garfield Sobers, one of the greatest players of all time who made history in the sport during the 1960s and 1970s. The 89-year-old passed away at his home in Barbados.
In a statement, International Cricket Council President Jay Shah said: “Today, the world of cricket has lost one of its greatest icons. Sir Garfield Sobers was not only the greatest all-rounder the game has ever known, but one of the greatest athletes in history. His extraordinary ability to influence every aspect of a match redefined the standards of the sport, and he was a true global ambassador for the game.”
The Caribbean Cricket Federation also issued an official statement: “In the history of a people, there are moments when the life of a single man becomes intertwined with the hopes, dreams, and identity of entire generations. Today, the Caribbean mourns the passing of such a towering figure: the Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers, a proud son of Barbados, whose extraordinary journey has become part of our region’s history and whose crystalline class has carried the name of the West Indies with honor throughout the world.”
“Through his excellence, he instilled in millions of people—on our islands as well as in the diaspora—a renewed confidence in what could be achieved. He demonstrated that greatness is not limited by the size of our nations, the geography of our islands, or the circumstances of our origins.”
“Sir Garfield Sobers became much more than just a sports icon: he became the very symbol of excellence, resilience, and the potential of the Caribbean. His achievements have brought pride to Barbados, inspiration to the West Indies, and admiration to every corner of the cricket world,” the statement concludes.
