According to reports in El País, the structure suddenly collapsed under the weight of the people who had climbed onto it to celebrate; unfortunately, there was nothing that could be done to save the boy. The municipal government of Ciudad Rodrigo expressed its grief in an official statement: “This tragedy affects the entire community, on what was supposed to be a night of celebration but instead turned into collective grief.”

Local authorities noted that the fountain has been a gathering place for sports celebrations for years and that there had been no reports of structural damage. The flags at City Hall will fly at half-mast for three days.
