Napoli Transfer Market: New Signing at Risk After Failed Sale; Countermeasure in the Works
Napoli is trying to step up its efforts in the transfer market to strengthen its defense, but the path to securing a new center back for Massimiliano Allegri is becoming more complicated just as the front office thought it had cleared space by offloading players. The race remains open between Federico Gatti and Benoit Badiashile, the two players identified in recent days as top priorities to bolster the back line. But the failure to sell Jesper Lindstrom now risks slowing down the entire plan.
The situation became more complicated on Monday: just when Lindstrom’s transfer seemed all but done and the player had landed in Germany to undergo medicals with Schalke 04, the loan deal—which included an option to buy set at 5 million—suddenly fell through. German media reported that Napoli had altered certain conditions from the initial verbal agreements, but the club strongly rejected this version of events in an official statement.
“After an exchange of correspondence took place yesterday regarding the general terms of the contract—without the financial terms of the agreement or the payment terms ever being called into question—at 1:00 p.m. today (Monday, ed.) the German club informed us that certain proposed clauses were unacceptable, particularly in light of the changed technical and sporting needs resulting from injuries to two players over the weekend, which would have required a change in transfer strategies,” the statement reads.
“At 1:22 p.m., a response was sent to the German club in which, while reiterating that these were minor changes to the structure of the deal and acknowledging the German club’s new technical needs, SSC Napoli would have been willing to accept the contract as proposed by Schalke,” the club added.
“Despite this, at 5:32 p.m., the German club confirmed that it was no longer interested due to changed priorities in assembling its roster, clearly demonstrating the actual reasons underlying the failure to finalize the transaction. In the hope of having definitively clarified the true reasons for the player’s failed transfer, SSC Napoli reserves the right to take any action before the competent authorities aimed at protecting its rights,” Napoli concluded in its statement.
The failure to sell Lindstrom now weighs on the incoming transfer market. Napoli had planned to save 3 million euros—the amount of Lindstrom’s annual salary—to make a push for one of the two center backs, but the Dane’s return is forcing sporting director Giovanni Manna to recalibrate his strategy. Despite this setback, the strategy remains clear: the search for a new defender continues.
