The Zirkzee Case: Juventus, Fiorentina, Napoli, and Everton Come Away Empty-Handed

Throughout the summer transfer window, Zirkzee’s name came up time and time again. The former Bologna forward was linked to numerous clubs. It seemed 100% certain that he would be leaving Manchester United.

Juventus considered him several times, even going so far as to engage in talks with Manchester United to reach an agreement. Fiorentina, too, after realizing that Kean would not be staying, made advances toward the Dutchman, as did Napoli, which, right at the eleventh hour, attempted to bring him to the Maradona Stadium with a last-minute move (the Neapolitan proposal to the Red Devils was a loan with an option to buy).

It wasn’t just Italian clubs. Everton was practically certain it could count on the Dutch striker. The deal seemed destined for the classic “white smoke” (a successful conclusion), but in the end, it fell through, and—in a stunning twist—Zirkzee remained a Manchester United player.

It appears that Manchester United itself put a stop to the deal with Everton, thereby deciding to “withdraw” the striker from the transfer market. Now, of course, the question is what will happen next. The former Bologna striker has been having a tough time with the Red Devils, and it won’t be easy for him to earn a spot on the team when there’s been talk all summer of him being sold. January is still a long way off, so Zirkzee will have to find a way to make his mark—even if it won’t be easy at all.
