Yet another blow for Filippo Tortu: his season is over

Filippo Tortu has had some very bad luck: the Milanese sprinter was forced to withdraw from the 200-meter final at the Mediterranean Games. The decision was made by mutual agreement with the Federation’s staff as a precautionary measure.

“Due to muscle fatigue in the area of my previous left biceps injury, in agreement with the Federation staff, we decided not to take any risks and make the situation worse,” Tortu stated.

This withdrawal brings to a close a particularly unlucky season for the Italian sprinter, who will now focus on preparing for the 2027 World Championships with the goal of returning to the track in top form.

Filippo Tortu, the first Italian to break the 10-second barrier in the 100-meter dash, held the Italian record in the event from 2018 to 2021 with a time of 9.99 seconds, which was later broken by Marcell Jacobs. He also holds the Italian record in the 4×100-meter relay alongside Lorenzo Patta, Fausto Desalu, and the aforementioned Marcell Jacobs with a time of 37.50 seconds, which earned them the gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

The Milanese sprinter has received numerous honors: in 2018, he was awarded the title of Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic; in 2021, he was named Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic; and in the same year, he was also awarded the Golden Collar for Sporting Merit.
