COVID-19: Granit Xhaka Admits, “I Obtained a Fake Certificate.” He Won’t Be Joining the National Team

Following Granit Xhaka’s personal statement regarding his vaccination certificate, the player will not take part in the men’s national team’s next training camp. The decision was reached by mutual agreement during a meeting between Xhaka and ASF management, which released the news.

“Granit Xhaka informed us of the situation last night and also told us that he would speak publicly about it and take responsibility for his actions,” explains ASF President Peter Knäbel. “We appreciate Granit’s decision to take this step and address what happened. At the same time, we have jointly concluded that it is in the team’s best interest to hold this training camp without him. Now we want to restore calm and focus fully on the team and our upcoming UEFA Nations League matches.”

The Swiss national team gathered today in Belek (TUR), where it will prepare through Friday for its two away matches against North Macedonia and Scotland. On October 3 and 6, the national team will face Slovenia and North Macedonia in Lucerne.

“At the end of this international window, we’ll reassess the situation together with Granit and discuss the next steps,” concludes Peter Knäbel.

“Regarding the COVID-19 vaccination, I was very uncertain at the time and had some concerns. I had a deep mistrust of the vaccine and was in a state of emotional turmoil. I was afraid, and instead of addressing my doubts and concerns through the proper channels, I obtained a fake certificate. Today, I clearly understand that this action was wrong. It was a mistake. I’m sorry,” the player admitted on his social media.
