Mancini makes a promise to the angry fans who feel betrayed

Press conference with Roberto Mancini, determined to win back Italy and, above all, the Italian fans: “Yesterday, when I returned, I was very happy; we’ve shared some wonderful moments together. It’s a great pleasure for me. The concepts I’ll share with the players will be simple: to win, you have to be a team that plays well, enjoys itself, and is eager to achieve something important. I’ll tell them to have fun, because in sports, if you don’t enjoy yourself, you won’t achieve results. We’re lucky—our work is our passion.”

On the squad selection: “To build a strong team for the future, we need to quickly identify the players who can help us, especially the young ones. We want to see them on the field. It’s great to have players like Palestra, Dimarco, and Calafiori. In 2021, we had a national team with smaller players; now we’re on par with others physically as well. I don’t have any credit to my name for winning the European Championship. Regarding the decisions made years ago, I’ll have to perform well to win back the Azzurri fans who got angry or felt betrayed.”

We always have to deal with the issue of foreign players in Serie A: “We need to find a solution to this problem. We need to find players with technical skills, hoping they can take the next step in their respective clubs. Baldini has laid a solid foundation for our national team. We want to evaluate all the young players without leaving anything to chance. We can’t complain; we have to find a solution. The solution is to go out and scout them quickly, partly to avoid the risk of losing those with dual citizenship. Zoma has gone to Germany, where the level of play is excellent; he’s doing well, and we hope he continues.”
On the formation: “Aside from a few injured players, we’ll see. We’re open to any tactical situation: we can play with two strikers, in a 4-3-3, but also in other ways. The players are capable of doing many things; we’ll start training and then see how it goes over the next few days. A challenge or a new chapter? Both. I’m here to win as quickly as possible. I’m curious to see the younger players and to build a team with them. I’m sure we’ll have some great moments.”
