Filippo Volandri’s words after his success with the U.S.

Visibly thrilled after the 2-1 success over the United States, Italy captain Filippo Volandri came to the microphones of Sky Sport.

“It’s true because I tried to bring the team on Saturday, early, because it was one of the two opportunities to play on this blessed center however being new it was a little bit slower, it sped up in the second session,” he said about the speed of the court. “The practice courts are a little bit slower, they have a little bit higher bounce however from what you saw they approached, especially in doubles who had less chance, even this morning, to try the same court because they trained on the practice courts, great. 15-40 the first game, a dominated first set, the suffering that we expected at the beginning of the second set and then they were really super and at the first opportunity they brought home the break. But also the management of the last game I assure you was not trivial at all: Fabio put the towel on his head, I was talking to him but I don’t know if he heard half a word I said however he went to serve and never served so well in his life.”

“Did your voice lose it more in the first or second match? In the first one, Sonego for better or worse kills me. In fact I was surprised that then the voice even came back a little bit however it was nice because Sonego was coming from several days where he showed us a lot of energy, desire for redemption, with a fairly fast court his serve could make the difference and today he served amazingly well. It’s nicer this way because he had a match point where I half got up because the response seemed off and then I sat back down, it was hard to roll up his sleeves and he did a great job,” Volandri continued on Sonego’s feat.

“He had a huge game because he played against a strong player who was confident. Today we saw that he is in confidence because he gave little, he responded well, in the forehand we expected something more instead almost nothing came. Lorenzo started by struggling a bit more but as the first set went by he got closer and closer until he even found himself in command. He had the chances in the tie-break, he didn’t take advantage of them and he also paid for a bit of inexperience in the second, he had a 0-40 while Fritz at the first chance, used to bring it home, did. Lorenzo has margin, he did a great performance with margin and this is the most important part, that is we take these two sets we analyze them and try to do better,” he commented on Musetti’s defeat

“Matteo has a very important role, he gave us advice, because we can study as much as we want and we have studied a lot but Matteo who then plays with these players here gives you those nuances that also in the doubles were very important, he gave us two tips that absolutely made the difference, Matteo’s presence makes the difference,” he concluded, stressing the importance of Berrettini, even as an injured player.
