Douvikas Knocks Out Serbia in Injury Time at the Marakana

Greece defeated Serbia 2-1 at the Marakana Stadium in Belgrade in the first match of Group 2 of League A of the 2026-2027 Nations League. The Greek team, led by Jovanovic, came back from Zivkovic’s early goal with strikes by Tzolis and Como striker Douvikas, and now lead their group ahead of the Netherlands and Germany, who drew in the other match.

Less than four minutes in, the hosts took the lead through Zivkovic, who was the quickest to react in the box—Tzolakis had no chance. The Greeks responded immediately: Karetsas hit the outside of the post and, shortly after, forced a save from Vanja Milinkovic-Savic. The visitors looked the better side, but Jovic squandered a chance to make it 2-0 at the half-hour mark. Tzolis forced Milinkovic-Savic into a spectacular save. 1-0 at halftime.

The second half began with a scramble in the Serbian box: danger averted. A flurry of substitutions begins, and it continues to pour rain at Belgrade’s Marakana. A great goal by Tzolis in the 74th minute: the Arsenal star fires a diagonal shot that hits the post to Milinkovic-Savic’s left and finds the back of the net. In the final quarter-hour, Como forward Douvikas comes on for Karetsas.

Frantic final minutes: Joveljic hits the post, then Tzolakis saves the day. In the 95th minute, Greece scored the winning goal: Douvikas headed it in beautifully off a cross from Tsimikas.
