Concerns are growing over Daniel Osvaldo’s health. The former soccer player underwent surgery at the hospital in Lavallol, a town in the southern part of Greater Buenos Aires, due to a right-sided pleural effusion and was subsequently admitted to the intensive care unit.

The former forward for Atalanta, Lecce, Fiorentina, Bologna, Roma, Juventus, and Inter was rushed to the hospital on Thursday evening around 11 p.m. His sister found him at his home after the 40-year-old had been feeling unwell for several days. With the help of a friend, she then accompanied him to the hospital. According to reports in the Argentine press, doctors found a significant amount of pus and fluid in his lung.

After retiring from soccer, Osvaldo turned to music, only to recently return to the world of soccer as a television commentator. In recent years, he has spoken publicly on several occasions about his battle with addiction. Two years ago, he also shared a video in which he revealed that he was suffering from depression and had begun psychiatric treatment.

Wearing the Italian national team jersey, Daniel Osvaldo’s career began in the youth national teams. In 2007, he made one appearance for Italy’s Under-20 team, while between 2007 and 2008 he played in eight matches and scored one goal for the Under-21 team. He was also a member of the Olympic national team, making four appearances and scoring one goal in 2008. Between 2011 and 2014, Osvaldo played for the Italian senior national team, racking up 14 appearances and four goals.
