Cronos, the longtime lead singer and soul of Venom, has died: the music world is in mourning

The music world, particularly the heavy metal scene, is in mourning. In a long and heartfelt message posted on Venom’s official channels, the band announced the passing, at age 63, of Cronos—born Conrad Lant—the legendary vocalist and bassist who served in three distinct stints with the British band, helping to forever change the face of extreme music.
For over forty years, Cronos was the beating heart of Venom, leading the band from its very beginnings and helping to create a legacy destined to influence generations of musicians. From early albums such as *Welcome to Hell* and *Black Metal* all the way to *Into Oblivion* (2026), his aggressive and unmistakable style left a deep mark on the history of metal.
“Venom never followed the rules imposed by the market or the trends of the moment, always choosing a personal path that went against the grain,” reads the statement of condolence. “At the center of that journey was Cronos himself, an uncompromising, fearless, and unmistakable figure.”
Particularly touching were the words addressed to the fans—the famous “Legions”—who accompanied Cronos throughout his entire artistic journey. The band emphasized how deeply grateful Lant was to those who, over the years, bought their records, attended their concerts, and kept the Venom flame alive all over the world.
What made the tribute even more moving was the message from his son Nathan, who wanted to personally thank everyone who had supported his father throughout his career: “Cronos’s spirit will live on through his music, and his name will never be forgotten,” he wrote.
The legacy left by Conrad Lant extends far beyond Venom’s discography. His contribution is considered fundamental to the development of black metal, thrash, and numerous other genres of extreme music. Entire generations of artists have acknowledged the influence of his gravelly voice, his bass lines, and the rebellious attitude that characterized every phase of his career.
