The official announcement that Jannik Sinner will be sidelined until the end of the 2026 season will have implications not only for the world No. 1’s schedule but also for the race for the top spot in the ATP rankings. The South Tyrolean’s decision to devote himself entirely to recovering from his right knee injury opens up new possibilities in the race for the world’s top spot.

Sinner will remain at the top of the rankings for a few more weeks, thanks to the substantial lead he built up with his results in the first half of the year. However, his absence from the fall tournaments will prevent him from defending the points he earned twelve months ago in Vienna, Paris-Bercy, and the ATP Finals—events that played a decisive role in establishing his lead.

As the points earned last season gradually expire, his lead over his pursuers is inevitably set to narrow. At that point, Alexander Zverev—currently his main rival in the race for the No. 1 spot—will have a real chance to overtake him and claim the top spot in the world rankings for the first time in his career.

The timing will naturally depend on the results the German achieves in upcoming tournaments. Sinner, in fact, will not be able to add to his points total until his expected return in 2027, while Zverev will have several opportunities to accumulate valuable points and complete his comeback.

The news, however, represents a sacrifice that the Italian champion seems to have consciously accepted. In a message posted on social media, Sinner explained that, together with his doctors, he had chosen a long-term approach, foregoing an early return to focus exclusively on a full recovery.

For Italian tennis, this brings to a close a 2026 season that saw Sinner cement his place at the top of the world rankings in the first half of the season, with his Wimbledon triumph serving as the icing on the cake. The No. 1 ATP ranking may soon change hands, but the goal of the champion from Sesto Pusteria is clear: to return to the court in 2027 in the best possible condition, even if it means temporarily relinquishing the throne of world tennis.
