A Month in the EuroLeague for Juhann Begarin

Juhann Begarin is ASVEL’s newest addition. The French forward, who has previously played for Paris, Nanterre, and Monaco, joins the Villeurbanne squad, a participant in the 2026-27 EuroLeague.
The 24-year-old, who stands 1.96 meters tall and is known for his athleticism, is initially signing a one-month contract. Begarin will temporarily fill in for the injured Mathis Dossou-Yovo, who is dealing with an adductor injury. Having started his basketball career as an athletic wing player and selected 45th overall in the NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics, Begarin has even played power forward and center, standing out for his energy, defense, and versatility.
Dossou-Yovo’s name had already appeared in preseason reports: the French big man was part of the ASVEL roster that, in mid-September, participated in the 16th edition of the “City of Cagliari” International Tournament, a high-profile four-team tournament that also featured FC Bayern München, Hapoel Tel Aviv, and the newly promoted Maxima Roma. On that occasion, Coach Tony Parker’s team—Parker also serves as the club’s president—was defeated in the third-place game by the Rome-based team, 84–78, in a hard-fought contest full of twists and turns.
In that game, ASVEL relied on strong performances from TyTy Washington Jr. (13 points), Tremont Waters (12), and Myles Cale (14), but was unable to contain Maxima Roma’s comeback in the final minutes. This was a sign of inconsistency for a team that, setting aside its European ambitions, is still searching for its best form at the start of this season.
On the EuroLeague front, ASVEL had already kicked off its 2026–27 regular season on September 24, hosting Maccabi on the tournament’s opening day. The Villeurbanne team thus heads into this continental competition with a roster that will now have to do without Dossou-Yovo for an as-yet-undetermined period, and which, with the addition of Begarin, is attempting to maintain the depth necessary to withstand the grueling pace of a competition like the EuroLeague.
