A terrible tragedy has struck the world of rugby: Hyron Andrews, a second-row player for the Lions—a South African franchise that was set to make its Champions Cup debut tonight against La Rochelle—has died suddenly at the age of just 31.

The tragic incident occurred at the hotel where the South African team was staying in La Rochelle, France: Andrews was found dead in his bedroom after suffering a sudden illness while taking a shower.

Hyron Andrews, who had also played for the KZN Sharks in South Africa and the Sale Sharks in England during his career, is survived by his wife, Maighlin. The South African Rugby Union announced his passing, confirming the rumors that had been circulating for hours in the country’s media.

“This is terrible and shocking news,” said President Mark Alexander in a statement. “Our thoughts are with Hyron’s family and the entire Lions rugby community. There are no words adequate to express our shock and the depth of our sympathy for his wife Maighlin, his extended family, his friends, his teammates, and all those dear to him at this time of immense grief. Hyron was a respected member of the rugby community, and his contribution to the game and the impact he had on those around him will be remembered with great affection.”

“His untimely passing is a devastating loss, and we share in the grief of all those who knew and loved him. The thoughts and prayers of the entire South African rugby family are with Maighlin and all those mourning his passing. May they find strength, comfort, and peace in their shared memories of him and in the support of those close to them.”
