The soccer world is mourning the loss of Daniel Gonçalves, who passed away after a year in a coma. The young man had fallen ill in September 2025 during a training session with Polonia Nysa and was taken to the hospital in Opole in very serious condition. In the weeks that followed, he was able to breathe on his own without mechanical ventilation but never regained consciousness.

Polonia Nysa announced the young Daniel’s death in an official statement: “It is with deep sadness that we received the news of Daniel Gonçalves’s death. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. May he rest in peace.”

The young soccer player began his career at Damaiense Formação before moving to Benfica’s youth academy. He then played for B SAD U23, followed by Coruchense, Lusitano GC, Amora FC, BC Branco, and Loures. In the summer of 2023, he decided to leave Portugal to play in Norway with Lillehammer FK.

In February 2025, he transferred to Glubczyce in Poland, and five months later to Nysa, a team in the Polish third division based in Nysa, an urban-rural municipality in the Opole Voivodeship, about 430 kilometers from Warsaw.
