Italy tops Brazil 3-2

The first day of the United Cup for Italy ends with a victory. The Azzurri defeated Brazil 3-2 with a decisive win by Lucia Bronzetti.

Opening the program was the match of Matteo Berrettini, making his singles comeback from the injury he suffered in the last tournament played in Naples. The Roman tennis player defeated Brazilian Thiago Monteiro in two sets with a score of 6-4 7-6 in nearly two hours of play, putting Italy ahead 2-1.

Next came Lucia Bronzetti who literally swept her opponent Laura Pigossi. It was a one-sided match until 6-0 4-0 for the Romagnola. Here the Brazilian tennis player tried to get back into the match but Bronzetti was good at winning a very delicate 11th game to then close 6-2 in the second set and deliver the victory to Italy.

Little matter the defeat in mixed doubles of Camilla Rosatello and Matteo Berrettini, overcome by the Luisa Stefani-Rafael Matos pair (4-6 7-6 4-10). Italy will now face Casper Ruud’s Norway on Jan. 2.
