Filippo Ganna finished third in the time trial at the European championships.
The world champion, coming back from an exhausting Tour de France, tried to win another major triumph but in the end accusing a nine-second gap had to settle for the podium.
Triumphing was Stefan Bissegger, who mocked compatriot Stefan Kung by just five hundredths of a second.
Ganna, second at the halfway point of the race, dropped in the final while the new European champion like a diesel overtook everyone, taking a victory that was in some ways unexpected.
