Taylor Fritz puts Rest of the World back ahead by two points

Just hours after Carlos Alcaraz’s success over Ben Shelton had allowed Europe to peg the Rest of the World at 4-4 on the second day of the 2024 Laver Cup, Taylor Fritz responded to the Murcian by beating current world No. 2 Alexander Zverev, with a score of 6-4, 7-5.

Fritz, in his first singles match since losing in the US Open final to Jannik Sinner, confirmed his excellent period of form and overcame the German at the end of a hard-fought match that lasted one hour and 57 minutes of play. Thanks to this success, the U.S. takes a 6-4 lead in the match against Europe as it awaits the last match on Saturday.

The second day of the 2024 edition of Laver Cup will close with the doubles match between the European pair of Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas and the Rest of the World pair, which will instead feature Ben Shelton and Alejandro Tabilo. A success by the Rest of the World would put the team led by non-playing captain John McEnroe ahead by four points ahead of the final, decisive day.

On Sunday, in fact, the last doubles and the last three singles matches will be staged, awarding 3 points for victory to the team represented by the winning athletes. Thus, 12 points will be up for grabs at the Uber Arena in Berlin, where the Rest of the World is looking for its third consecutive success while Europe is looking for its first win since 2021.
