Milan-Cortina 2026, Deborah Compagnoni can't wait

A historical face of Italian sports, multi-decorated at both world and Olympic levels (three of her gold medals, as well as one silver, between 1992 and 1998), Deborah Compagnoni is looking forward to the brazier of Milan-Cortina 2026 welcoming the Olympic flame. Sportal.it had the pleasure of hearing from her directly, on the sidelines of "One year to go", an event held Thursday in Milan exactly one year before the start of the Winter Olympic Games.

"I am very close to this event,” explained the multiple Alpine skiing champion, an icon of the discipline in the 1990s. “I participated and won in three Olympics, I carried the flashlight in Turin. It's the most important sporting event in the world, capable of enhancing the value of our country even beyond the Olympic Games".

The Olympics are an important opportunity to rediscover the values behind sports, according to Compagnoni: "The young participants are lucky, they will have an indelible memory. I also think of those who will participate by watching the event and practicing sports themselves. It is an approach that is good for you and that you should always keep alive, starting from when you è small".

As far as alpine skiing is concerned, much is expected from the two top athletes of the national team, Federica Brignone and Sofia Goggia: "They are two athletes with established reputations – said Deborah Compagnoni -, they always win and are stimulated by competition. However, we should not limit ourselves to them, there will be many other athletes who will qualify and give their best".
