Lorenzo Musetti crushed Alex De Minaur 6-4 6-2 to secure qualification for the quarterfinals of the Madrid Masters 1000 and a much-sought-after entry into the top 10.

The day was a long one.

This is the’outcome of an interminable day, which began with Matteo Arnaldi&#8217s surprising victory over Frances Tiafoe and ended well after midnight with Musetti&#8217s success (match started at 11:07 p.m.), who as of next Monday will be the sixth Italian top 10 in Atp history after Adriano Panatta, Corrado Barazzutti, Fabio Fognini, Matteo Berrettini and Jannik Sinner.

“Today –were the first words spoken by Musetti at the end of the match –I started very well, I felt the ball very well from the very beginning and then I trusted so much from the first serve. The first gave me so many free points and that doesn&#8217t happen very often. I am surprised that I played so well. After Monte Carlo something changed inside me. It&#8217s something I have been waiting for a long time. I feel more confident on the court. The’attitude and mentality is that of a top 10”.
