Giulio Ciccone, fatal fall: retirement from Giro d'Italia 2025 arrives

Julio Ciccone’s Giro d’Italia is over after stage 14, which ended in Nova Gorica with Kasper Asgreen’s victory. The Lidl-Trek rider from Abruzzo had been involved in a crash 20 km from the finish and had equally managed to complete the stage. A few hours later, however, he was forced to raise the white flag.
Already after arriving in Nova Gorica, the words of Ciccone, who had reported pain in his right thigh, had been alarming. Despite the’absence of fractures, however, the muscle problems reported from the accident proved to be enough to determine his withdrawal. Bitterly, his comment: “Leaving the Giro d’Italia like this hurts, especially since the climbs were still to come and there was great confidence” in the team.
Ciccone suffered a large hematoma on the vastus lateralis muscle of the right quadriceps and a minor but equally insidious muscle fascia injury. These problems will force him to at least a couple of weeks stop from’activity, although surgery is not required.
“I need some’ time to recover my physical condition – Ciccone stressed again -I am so sorry, also because I have to leave a good position in the overall classification of this Giro d’Italia. We will see what to do for the rest of the season”.
