A high mountain stage the 17th that went from San Michele all’Adige to Bormio. The triumph of the pink jersey, Mexico’s Isaac Del Toro, who soloed to win the 17th stage of the Giro d’Italia and strengthen his leadership in the general classification. After a day of suffering and tactical battles, the UAE Emirates rider asserted himself with class and courage by conquering the summit of Bormio with a victory also in view of the general classification.

The route left no room for bad moments: Val di Non, Val di Sole, Passo del Tonale, the legendary Mortirolo climb with gradients of up to 16%, and finally Le Motte before the nosedive to the finish. A stage that has written important pages in cycling history and once again made the difference.

The race was ignited early, with a large breakaway composed of about thirty riders. On the Passo del Tonale it was Fortunato who passed first, but the group crumbled and gradually fragmented. On the Mortirolo climb it is Del Toro’s team, the UAE, that sets the pace, but surprisingly the Mexican pink jersey appears to be in trouble. Attacks and comebacks alternate, with Carapaz leading the way along with Pellizzari, while behind Del Toro remains more delayed.

However, it is in the final part that the Mexican resurges. On the ramps of the GPM of Le Motte, Bardet and Rubio came back under, but it was Del Toro, with a decisive sprint, who caught Carapaz and Bardet with 5 km to go. He anticipates both with great coolness and strength, crossing the finish line 3″ ahead of Bardet and 5″ ahead of Carapaz, also winning valuable bonuses.
