Max Verstappen to Mercedes remains more than just a suggestion of “cascomercato” in Formula 1, especially since Red Bull is experiencing a historic revolution with the departure of team principal Christian Horner after a 20-year partnership. However, it took Helmut Marko once again to try to shed light on the matter, armoring the Dutch champion.

“Max can meet whoever he wants – Marko stressed to the Austrians of ‘Oe24’ in reference to a possible dialogue between Verstappen and Toto Wolff that took place in Ibiza -. The fact remains that we have ongoing a valid contract with him. We start from that, and our assumption is that Max will still stay at Red Bull”.

Marko also went into the sensitive Horner issue, specifying that Red Bull made the decision by not keeping its top driver in the dark. The team advisor, however, on Verstappen’s own opinion on the matter was more sibylline: “Max was informed. However, I do not want to add more on this matter”.

Finally, Marko stressed that in Red Bull the focus remains on the results to be achieved on the track, especially with Max Verstappen. Other distractions are to be avoided, starting with the rumored return of Sebastian Vettel: “This is not on the agenda, and will continue not to be. There are still 332 points up for grabs in this championship, and they are a significant haul. At both Spa and the Hungaroring we will bring upgrades, which we hope will work. If we then finish behind the McLarens in Belgium, then we can call the world championship lost once and for all”.
