A bittersweet night for the Italians involved in the Cincinnati Masters 1000. After Jannik Sinner’s excellent debut and the bitter disappointment due to the elimination of Lorenzo Musetti, it was the turn of Lorenzo Sonego and Flavio Cobolli, both of whom were on court on the concrete of the American tournament.

The Piedmontese player, seeded No. 31 in the men’s draw, won over Belgium’s Bergs in two sets: 6-3, 7-6 the partials in favor of the blue player. Very solid match for the Piedmontese who conceded only one break point in the entire match (saved masterfully). Perfect tie-break, won 7-4.

Lorenzo Sonego will face, in the third round of the American tournament, Taylor Fritz, number 4 on the scoreboard and, of course, the absolute idol of the house.

Bad loss for Flavio Cobolli. Starting as the number 15 seed, he was surprised by Atmane. The Frenchman, who came straight from the qualifiers, took home the victory at the end of three hard-fought sets: 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 the partials. Bitterly chewing the blue who, in the third, decisive, set, was ahead 4-3 and serving. A heavy defeat for Flavio Cobolli that brakes, at least momentarily, his ambitions (he was back from a more than good job in that of Toronto). An immediate reset will be needed to make himself ready for the US Open, just as it was for Lorenzo Musetti.
