Mattia Debertolis is dead, tragedy in the world of'orienteering

Tristissimo statement from Fiso, the Italian Federation of Orienteering Sports: “Mattia Debertolis has left us, cared for to the end by his mother Erica, his brother Nicolò, the rest of his family in Italy with his dad Fabio, his partner Jessica, his grandparents, the president of his club Gabriele Viale, coach Stefano Raus and his teammates Francesco, Anna and Caterina, by Alessio Tenani and Riccardo Scalet, by the entire IOF governance and the World Games Organizing Committee, by the doctors and nurses of Chengdu Hospital, by the representatives of the Italian government in China, by our love and that of those who knew you everywhere in the world”, the note reads.

The 29-year-old Trentino orienteering athlete died the day after the World Games opener in Chengdu, China, which was marked by heat, with the temperature reaching 43 degrees.

Transported d’urgently to the hospital after collapsing to the ground, Mattia Debertolis remained hospitalized for 24 hours in intensive care with a reserved prognosis.

The situation, which immediately appeared very serious, worsened Monday afternoon when the unfortunate athlete also received the sacrament of Extreme Unction, officiated by the bishop of Chengdu.
