Italy, Gennaro Gattuso in trouble: the three new knockouts in a matter of hours

Italy in trouble ahead of the national team’s upcoming commitments, set for Oct. 11 and Oct. 14, when the Azzurri will face Estonia and Israel respectively with the goal of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. On Wednesday, coach Gennaro Gattuso in a matter of hours in fact had to deal with the injuries of three players among those who could have been part of the summonses for the matches in Tallinn and Udine.
The first, and most serious, is the one that occurred to Giovanni Leoni. In fact, the young defender suffered the dramatic rupture of the left cruciate ligament right on the occasion of his debut in the Liverpool jersey. For him, who just in September had taken his first steps with the national team, there is talk of at least six months of stop and a season that already in September could be compromised.
But Italy’s rearguard may face an additional, not insignificant problem. Indeed, earlier today Napoli announced the’results of the instrumental examinations Alessandro Buongiorno underwent after the injury he sustained in the match against Pisa. “Low grade injury of the long adductor muscle of the left thigh” reads the bulletin issued by the Neapolitan club. And Gattuso already has to do without Giorgio Scalvini, who was again injured with Atalanta.
Third absent, however, is a potential player who in Gattuso’s Italy would play further forward. “Nicolò Rovella is struggling with a recto-adductor syndrome and has already started the rehabilitation process” reads Lazio official channels. In this case the’absence if nothing else will last significantly less time, being averted the nightmare of an’operation. But in a week that will be decisive for the fate of the national team, come three shingles that certainly were not wanted.
