Lorenzo Musetti clears first hurdle in Vienna

A start without major difficulties for Lorenzo Musetti in the ATP 500 tournament in Vienna, in which the Carrara player plays with the number 4 seed: he beat, in the first round, the lucky loser Hamad Medjedovic, with the final score of 6-4, 6-3 in one hour and nineteen minutes of play. Musetti thus bounces back after the Brussels knockout against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

In spite of the false start, with the first game lost on his own serve, Musetti immediately regained the upper hand, signed the counterbreak for the 1-1 and continued in the set without taking any further risks, and then went on to close it out after game number ten, won by taking advantage of the first (and therefore only) set point available on the Serb’s serve.

In the second set Musetti comfortably won games on his own serve and came close to breaking on a couple of occasions, although he was unable to break his opponent until 3-3. From there on, however, the difference between the two emerges clearly: Musetti wins the decisive break in the eighth game and closes a little further on a three-game losing streak that is worth the victory.

The Italian, included by captain Filippo Volandri in the team that will face the 2025 Davis Cup Finals, already knows the name of his opponent in the second round: it is Tomas Martin Etcheverry, from Argentina, who in the first round in Vienna beat Norwegian wild card Nicolai Budkov Kjaer with a double 6-3 in seventy minutes of play.
