Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori immediately out in Basel

Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori’s path to Basel is interrupted at the first hurdle. In the first round of doubles, the two Azzurri, veterans of reaching the semifinals in Stockholm, failed to overcome the pair formed by Czech Adam Pavlasek and Pole Jan Zielinski, who were able to impose themselves 6-3, 6-4.
The match lasted 64 minutes: fatal, to the pair of Italian tennis players, the break suffered in the sixth game of the first set and the one in the third game of the second, the only two moments in which the one who was serving did not then win the game. For Bolelli and Vavassori it is the third elimination in the first round in a month, following those in Beijing on Sept. 26 and Shanghai on Oct. 4.
The two were thus unable to celebrate in the best possible way their call-up for the Davis Cup Finals, scheduled for Nov. 18-23 in Bologna. In addition to Bolelli and Vavassori, Lorenzo Musetti, Flavio Cobolli and Matteo Berrettini will also be there, while Jannik Sinner, whose forfeit has nettably divided the position of insiders,
will be absent.
Simone Bolelli was already on the Davis teams that won the tournament in 2023 and 2024, while Vavassori took part in last year’s event. The two are also in the running for participation in the ATP Finals as far as doubles is concerned: in 2024 their participation stopped at the group stage of the final tournament on the ATP calendar.
