Matteo Berrettini gets off to a good start in Vienna: beats Popyrin in two sets

Matteo Berrettini wins and convinces on his debut at the Vienna ATP 500. The Roman, world number 59, beat Alexei Popyrin, number 49 in the ATP rankings, in two sets with a final score of 7-6 6-3 after just over an hour and a half of play.
In the first set, it was the serve that dominated with both players conceding a’single break point, in the case of the Australian it coincided with a set point for the Azure, but they were saved. In the tie-break Matteo went ahead 4-1, suffered the overtaking of Popyrin (4-5) but strung the last three points that earned him the partial (7-5).
In the second set the balance holds until 3-3: in the fateful seventh game the Roman breaks his opponent’s serve by stringing a series of three consecutive games with which he also makes the second partial his (6-3).
Berrettini thus flies to the round of 16 at the”Erste Bank Open‘ where he will face British player Cameron Norrie, world number 35, who surprisingly eliminated Andrey Rublev, seventh seed, in the first round.
