In Newcastle’s last Champions League match against PSV Eindhoven, Yoane Wissa also scored, scoring his first Champions League goal in minute 8 of the match against the Dutchmen. The star, who has been playing for the Magpies since September 2025, five years ago risked going blind due to a terrible ambush.

Just before he moved from Lorient to Brentford, a woman came into Yoane Wissa&#8217s house and threw acid in his face: “I was screaming and couldn&#8217t breathe, I was in a terrible state – he told the Sun. My wife immediately called an ambulance and they took me straight to the hospital. The doctors said my eyes were torn, I had to do specific dressings every hour. It was a nightmare, since then I panic as soon as I hear a strange noise in the house”.

“The’only thing that kept me going was knowing that my children are safe. I had surgery on both eyes, and the doctor told me I would have to use eye drops for the rest of my life. It took six months before I completely regained my sight. The days immediately after the accident were traumatic for me. I know I will never feel the same as before” recounted Yoane Wissa.

Brought up in the youth ranks of Châteauroux, Yoane Wissa played for Angers on loan between 2016 and 2017, then moved to Ajaccio. Back at Angers, he was bought outright by Lorient in January 2018 for 2 million euros and his career took a turn.

Thanks to the excellent performances churned out with the French club, he came to the attention of Brentford and in 2021 moved to the Premier League for 10 million euros. Initially he failed to play much and was behind Ivan Toney in the hierarchies, then things improved and the English bomber’s injury allowed him to take the field more regularly.

Last summer, after a fantastic year in tandem with Igor Thiago, Newcastle invested nearly 60 million euros to sign him. So far, Wissa has scored 3 goals in 13 games.
