As is to be expected, what happened to Lindsey Vonn on Sunday morning continues to hold the headlines. The dramatic images of her fall (in which, unfortunately, the U.S. champion fractured her left leg) during the downhill have gone around the world and have also been analyzed by experts and former champions. Also having his say during an interview granted to Corriere del Ticino was Giorgio Rocca, one who left his mark on world skiing.

“Let’s say that the impact with the door startled her and, afterwards, she could not keep control of her skis. It was more human error than bad luck. Was it a gamble to race in her condition? Even I, in her place, would have tried. Characteristically, we are similar, and I think I too would have shown up at the start” told the 50-year-old from Chur.

Sofia Goggia also spoke on Tuesday about Vonn, whose Olympics ended in the worst way: “I read this morning the message she posted on social media. It breaks my heart to think that she is in a hospital with a broken tibia at 41 when she had gone through all this effort to race in the Olympics, going out on the third gate, falling like that, after dominating all season. Mi ma fale, my heart hurts”.

Lindsey Vonn, after her serious injury in Cortina, spoke for the first time on her instagram profile from the bed of the hospital where she is hospitalized: “My Olympic dream did not end as I had dreamed. It was not a fairy tale ending or a fairy tale, it was simply life. In downhill races, the difference between a strategic line and a catastrophic injury can be minimal. By just 13 cm, my right arm hooked into the door, causing the fall. The ruptured ACL and past injuries had nothing to do with it. Unfortunately, I suffered a complex fracture of the tibia that is stable but will require several surgeries to be repaired properly”.
