Spectacle in Sabaudia

The National University Canoe, Kayak and Rowing Championships were staged at the Lake Paola basin in Sabaudia.

National title to CUS Roma, which excelled in the canoe and kayak disciplines, ahead of CUS Pavia and CUS Milano. In rowing, the top step of the podium is taken by CUS Torino, which precedes CUS Pavia and CUS Milano.

In the individual disciplines, on Saturday 23 Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medalist Valentina Rodini won the national title under the colors of CUS Mo.Re. in the 2,000 meters, while for canoeing, CUS Trieste Olympian Francesca Genzo was crowned National University Champion in the K1 200 meters.

Entusiastic at the end of the two days of competitions, the president of the Italian University Sports Center Antonio Dima: “The CUS responded with delegations with large numbers, but not only. In Sabaudia we also saw a lot of quality and the athletes competing were admirable for the spirit with which they faced the weekend. University sport thanks to them has restarted in the best way this season and even the weather supported us by giving us forty-eight hours of sunshine. May all this be a good omen for the movement.”

Positive results then for the first competitive event of the best Italian student athletes, who from CUS Trieste to CUS Bari competed in the water representing all of Italy: “We are happy with how the restart CNUs went overall. I would like to thank the federations that collaborated in the successful outcome of the event, in the persons of President Abbagnale and President Buonfiglio for their effective collaboration,” concluded President Dima.

The final overall Canoe and Kayak standings saw CUS Milano take the lowest step on the podium, with CUS Pavia taking second place and CUS Roma triumphant at the top. The rankings were updated on Monday 25 following a rectification of the counts received from the Italian Federation of Timekeepers.

“Every year with immense pride we note a qualitatively and quantitatively increasing participation demonstrating that, profitably reconciling academic path and high-level sport is possible, and the CUSI, with the appointment of the CNU, is the maximum expression of this – says the president of the Italian Canoe Kayak Federation Luciano Buonfiglio -. We are proud to be able to represent cum laude in the world, also through the numerous medals won at the University Championships, the Italy of canoeing. I have always been convinced that motivated people can overcome their limits, because in sports as in study, dedication and perseverance are essential to achieve the goal set. A thank you to President Antonio Dima, with the wish that the university sports movement can get the placement it deserves in the world of sports.”

In rowing, the students of the Lombard capital repeat the bronze, placing behind CUS Pavia, which fails to get the better of CUS Torino, which celebrates the supremacy among rowers.

“It’s good to have seen so many youngsters participating in such a well-organized event, we are all gradually returning to normal, and that’s no small thing after this long stop,” commented Italian Rowing Federation President Giuseppe Abbagnale. We are happy to be back in the water for the CNUs, it is a competition that our athletes have been missing and despite the seasonal period that is not very prone to our discipline, respectable results have emerged. Rodini’s success and the presence of other athletes who took part in the Olympic expedition testify to the interest in university sports.”
