Serena Williams, victory is not enough: her painful admission
A victory, which does not erase a painful secret.
Serena Williams is back, almost a year after her terrible injury at Wimbledon 2021, and she has already won. Her first match after her return, in fact, saw her play in Eastbourne paired with Ons Jabeur and beat the duo of Sara Sorribes Tormo and Marie Bouzkova. However, this does not erase colossal doubts about the future.
“I feared that I would never come back to play. Yes, I admit it, because if I said otherwise I would be dishonest,” Serena Williams admitted in the press conference. “Fortunately, right now I feel good physically. That’s why now I act and think day by day, one match at a time.”
At the same time, however, retirement is always in the background. “The hamstring injury took a long time for a full recovery. Precisely for this reason I don’t want to think about it too much, I would risk making even hasty decisions. I can say that I will not make this kind of decision already after Wimbledon. But I really don’t know what can happen in my near future,” Serena Williams admitted.
