Wimbledon: Rafa Nadal wins but does not convince, Sonego awaits him
Rafa Nadal makes his own, and now Lorenzo Sonego awaits him.
Second round without any surprises but with a few too many difficulties for Rafa Nadal, who was able to beat Ricardas Berankis in three sets after four sets and three hours of play. It ended 6-4, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 for the Mallorcan, Lorenzo Sonego’s next opponent on the London grass at Wimbledon.
The ATP No. 4 struggled to get into gear against the world No. 106, taking the first set thanks to a break that came only in the 10th and final game. He struggled even more in the second set, in which he even had to come back from a lead the Lithuanian had taken to 2-1 in a lightning-fast third game. Then came the double break that made it 3-3 and then 6-4, just what did not happen instead in the third set: Nadal immediately ceded his service to his opponent, and never recovered.
The Iberian champion then accelerates in the fourth set, which then turns out to be the decisive one. The breakaway at 3-0 is the right one, although Berankis tries to respond. And for Sonego, who appeared in great form against Gaston, it could now prove to be a golden opportunity to face Nadal at this specific moment. Especially if his condition should remain that way in the continuation of Wimbledon.
