Tour 2022, tremendous disappointment for Filippo Ganna

Ganna finished his time trial behind rivals Tadej Pogacar and Wout Van Aert.

He hoped for it, believed in it, dreamed of it, but the yellow jersey did not come. In the first stage of the Tour de France 2022 — a 13.2-kilometer time trial on the streets of Copenhagen, Denmark — the Italian rider failed to achieve the feat. Ganna still edged out Mathieu Van der Poel at the finish line, but had to bow to Tadej Pogacar – one of the big favorites for the overall victory – and Wout Van Aert, who were ahead of him at the time trial by about three and five seconds, respectively.

The Piedmontese cyclist’s action looked good, although, at the finish, his rear wheel looked deflated. While waiting to see if there actually was a mechanical problem that may have affected his performance, Ganna chews bitterly: the yellow jersey dream will still have to wait.
