Matteo Berrettini stable, Jannik Sinner no
Few but important changes in today’s edition of the singles and doubles rankings of the Pepperstone ATP Race to Turin, which is used to determine the eight players and eight doubles pairs that will participate in the Nitto ATP Finals scheduled to be held at the Pala Alpitour in Turin from Nov. 13-20.
As for the Italians, in singles the best remains Matteo Berrettini, stable in 12th position, while Jannik Sinner loses one, dropping to 16th. After a stop for Covid that prevented him from playing at Wimbledon, the Roman tennis player makes his competitive comeback in Gstaad, Switzerland, where he won his first ATP title four years ago. Next week Berrettini will be back on court on clay, in Kitzbuhel (Austria), before leaving for the season on cement in North America, leading up to the last Slam of the season, the US Open. The double date in the two ATP 250s between Switzerland and Austria could already prove to be very important in moving closer to the Top 8 in the Pepperstone ATP Race to Turin. Should Berrettini win both tournaments, in fact, he could gain 500 points by climbing to 2,195 in the Race: he would then have the chance to overtake Hubert Hurkacz (1,890), Novak Djokovic (1,970) and Taylor Fritz (2,060) who are ahead of him occupying the 11th to 9th positions. Hurkacz and Djokovic, in fact, will not be on the court this week or next. Fritz, on the other hand, will play from July 25 the first event of the American summer season, in Atlanta. Should Berrettini win both tournaments in Gstaad and Kitzbuhel, Fritz would remain ahead of him only by reaching at least the final in Georgia.
