New center sets fans ablaze

Dinamo Sassari has announced the signing for the 2022/2023 season of U.S. center Chinanu Onuaku, class of 1996 from Lanham Maryland, an NBA pick in 2016 in the second round with Houston and MVP of the last Israeli championship with the Bnei jersey, finished with 16.7 points, 9.9 rebounds and over 1 stoppage average. He also won the Best Player of the Israel Cup, which he won as the absolute star player.

Only two years in college with Rick Pitino’s prestigious Lousville (his second 10-point, 8.9-rebound average), Onuaku tries the card and declares for the NBA draft, being chosen in the second round with the number 37 by the Houston Rockets, who put him under contract. He shuttles between the NBA and G-League first with the Vipers and then Greensboro before landing in 2019 in South Korea to monetize his talent. He decided to build a career in Europe, starting in Croatia with the Zadar jersey with which he won a cup and a championship as MVP. This past season he plays with the Bnei Israelis, who make it to the title finals and win a Champions League pass. Onauku was named MVP of the tournament. He won the Israel Cup playing the final still as MVP with 30 points and a crazy match. In the playoff semifinals he broke through Maccabi Tel Aviv with a monstrous decisive Game 3 of 25 points, 15 rebounds, 13/15 at the free and 5 assists for a resounding 43 rating. 18 points and 20 rebounds in Game 1 of the finals against Hapoel Holon.

Onuaku is a center of size who gives great depth to the offense and protects the iron. He has movements in the low post, is always strong at rebounding and is a big man scorer, a long man who has aggressiveness and a sense of the basket as well as outstanding athleticism. He is an over-the-top passer, perhaps his best skill from a technical standpoint for a long man, has shot front on dumps and is very good at being able to roll and finish near the iron. Very good at taking position inside the pitturato, knows how to use his body and is a player who can put any defender in trouble because of the variety of his game.
