Simone Inzaghi grooms his team despite success
Inter coach would have liked to suffer less on the sidelines
Inter started the 2022/23 championship with three points, but Simone Inzaghi would have preferred to close out the match against Lecce earlier, instead of waiting until the 95th minute to cheer Denzel Dumfries’ goal-victory.
“We believed in it until the end and this is the most important thing of the night,” the Piacenza coach told ‘Sky Sport’ after the success at the Via del Mare. “We did very well in the first half hour, then we got nervous after the bad foul on Lautaro. We managed to win, but we have to understand why we were reduced to winning with a goal scored in the 95th minute.”
“The boys did well to believe in it but the game should have been closed earlier,” Inzaghi reiterated. “The team showed a lot of heart, but as a coach I would never want to win in the 95th minute.
The Nerazzurri coach also spoke about the refereeing controversy related to Baschirotto’s foul on Lautaro Martinez, for which all the Interisti asked, in vain, for a red card: “It doesn’t matter to talk about it now, the referee decided so, we just have to think about playing.”
